Description

Anthony Dransfeld is a consummate storyteller. As a special correspondent to the Kimberley Bulletin newspaper Tony regaled readers with one hockey story after another from the past. In Hockey Night in the Kootenays, Tony spins hockey tales about the heydays of WIHL hockey, its star players, the bitter rivalries between teams like the Cranbrook Royals and the Kimberley Dynamiters, the hard fought battles, the colourful players and the on-and-off the ice antics of the leagues hockey players. He brings to life players who had grown up in this rich early hockey environment and who went on to great success in other leagues including making it to the "show" or the NHL. This book also captures sports memories from other local sports like skiing and baseball. Hockey Night in the Kootenays presents a compilation of Tony's columns over the years, as well as a few other sports related stories from the region.

About the author:

Tony Dransfeld was born in Toronto, Ontario on January 12, 1947. His family moved to Kimberley when he was five years old to build and operate the North Star Motel in Meadowbrook, just east of Kimberley. Tony's love of sports and his gregarious nature served him well as he graduated from Selkirk Secondary High School 1967. If there was a sporting event, a hockey game, a ski race or a ball tournament on the go chances are Tony was either participating or watching the game. He grew up in the heyday of WIHL and the Kimberley Dynamiters, the early days of skiing on Kimberley's North Star Mountain and playing baseball or slowpitch on diamonds throughout the Kootenays. Tony attended university at Gonzaga in Spokane, Washington and Simon Fraser University in Burnaby. He has traveled extensively throughout his life, including recent travels to Nepal. Tony lives in Cranbrook, where he hangs out with many of friends from his sporting past.
